One Design Concept, Three Ways

When I was first learning how to make jewelry, I remember someone telling me whenever you are designing earrings, don't be afraid to look at them upside down because they might be even better that way. Lately, I've been looking at some of my popular pieces in my inventory, just to see if there is anything I could improve about the design. I had it in my head to redo my "Ladybug Amidst the Leaves Bracelet". It's a three strand bracelet, made with lots of seed beads and glass leaves, with one tiny ladybug, hidden amidst the leaves.
I decided to redo the bracelet using flat leaves, but keep the three strands. I liked the new version, but it seemed like a lot of flat leaves, so I did a second bracelet that combined flat leaves and leaves with center holes across. Finally, I couldn't resist making a charm bracelet. I didn't do a necklace.....yet!

How I Love Dime Beads

From time to time, I become taken with a particular type of bead, and I love to gather lots of colors of them and "get to know them". I can almost never walk past a tulip bead, except for one time when I encountered a day-glo orange batch of them. I also love floral beads, faceted pearls and vintage leaf beads.
Recently, I became infatuated with vintage dime beads and nailhead beads (1900s), and I started collecting them. I often used them as tiny dangles on necklaces and bracelets. I was pretty content to rely on them this way, until one day, I was puttering about with some leftover dime beads from a necklace, and it occurred to me that I had never used them with earrings. I felt rather doltish about that, and immediately
set to work. Several pairs of earrings later, I was so pleased to have used them in a different way. My lesson learned is always be willing to look, look again, leap, and keep looking.

I am always looking for unusual beads and components. Sometimes I browse through my favorite supply shops to see what is new, and sometimes I search for a specific item such as glass leaves or vintage lockets. Every once in a while, I will come upon a component (when I was looking for something else) that makes my heart do a somersault.
That is how I found this stately queen. She is quite a large piece, a presence! I needed a way to connect her for a necklace, so I added some filigree, and pondered a bit about what the rest of the necklace would look like. I will show you in a bit. She does have a delightful companion. Can you guess who that might be?

The Rest of the Necklace

Inspiration for jewelry can come from all kinds of unexpected sources, beyond color and shape. When I first glimpsed upon the dainty vintage red and white cabochons, the charms in this necklace, I immediately thought of redwork embroidery. I knew I wanted to design a necklace or bracelet based on this theme. I have so many happy memories of my mother teaching me how to embroider when I was quite young. As a young girl, I loved the classic British novels, and taking out my needle and thread and sewing hoop and working on a piece of embroidery created a quiet camaraderie with whatever character or plot I was caught up in at the time.
So I had my redwork cabochons set aside in my bead box, but there they sat for a very long time because I just couldn't find the "rest of the necklace". It was truly such a thrill, when one day, when I wasn't even looking, I found the glass cabochon with the lovely floral basket, so typical of embroidery themes, and how wonderful that it was red and white. The crisp white background of the cabochon reminded me of embroidery cloth. Now that the necklace is done, I have a few of the smaller cabochons left over, so I am thinking of working on a matching charm bracelet.

Mix and Match Sunday

When I saw this coral tea dress, it was love at first site. You will find this dress and many more delightful frocks at sohomode on Etsy. (sohomode.etsy.com) Not to mention the most amazing collection of tea dresses for your wedding party. Absolutely charming!

I thought it would be fun to browse through Etsy to find a necklace match for this dress. There are lots of different ways you can add jewelry to this dress, and there were so many possiblilities to choose from.

In the end, this Autumn Fields necklace from Ferry Tales Gifts on Etsy totally won me over. (ferrytalesgifts.etsy.com)

I love the way the dress and the necklace play off each other. The vintage buttons and lucite flowers in the necklace seemed so compatible with the dress. I can see this dress with all kinds of jewelry, including a vintage brooch. I know if I were lucky enough to own this lovely tea dress, I would try one after another of different colors and styles of necklaces, and earrings too.

Actually, what I like about the dress is how it's lines and colors can be used for many different kinds of "jewelry moods", so each time you change the jewelry you wear with the dress, you've created a completely different look.

What I love about the necklace is how it will work with several different colors and add such a finishing touch to any look. Aren't the layers of texture in this necklace so rich! This necklace puts the "s" in statement!

Friday Favorites

One of my favorite shops on Etsy is: Surprise Supplies. I love using flowers and leaves in my designs, and this shop has such a delectable selection. I often plan to pick out some flowers, and I end up ordering other items as well because there are so many pretty beads here. I can never resist browsing through the shop to make sure I haven't missed any new listings. It's not just the delightful "garden of beads" here that makes it one of my favorite shops. The shop owner is wonderful, always answering all my crazy bead questions, checking for a particular style, and from day one to the present, has been so kind and welcoming.

Happy Halloween

Tonight, as Halloween nears, we took a ride around the neighborhood to see the nighttime decorations. Wow! Rather macabre and downright creepy on some streets. I just like the classic pumpkins, some tricky cheerful witches and twinkling orange and purple lights.

Lately, I have been enjoying making vintage style earrings that add a "dollop" of color. They have a timeless look and are versatile as well, so they work well for a casual or a dressy look.
The earrings shown in this photo come in caramel, cherry red and spun sugar pink.

Story Necklace

I love how the elements in this photo create all kinds of possibilities for stories. A dog and a happy pet lover are out for a stroll, but looking again, is this a quest? Is the bird in the photo swooping in to bring a special message or guiding the master and the dog to a happy ending?

Beads can also tell a story. It's an old tradition, and a part of bead culture that fascinates and delights me. Over the years I have created different kinds of story necklaces that can be used for story telling.
The necklaces are composed of background "narration" beads and special "plot" beads.The storyteller can look over the necklace and create and tell a story, bead by bead.

I love sitting with a group of children and showing them the special beads such as a magic bird, a golden boat or a farmer and his wife and letting them make up a story. Sometime the blue beads are the ocean, sometimes the sky.

One of my favorite things about living in this lovely community is the path outside my back door which leads to a park. The park is steps away, perfect for an after dinner stroll amid the honeysuckle, bundles of yellow lilies, paths lined with rose of sharon and corners dotted with deep blue hydrangea.

Parlour Roses

Every once in a while, I come across some beads, images or charms that instantly tug at my heart strings and instantly inspire me. These lovely botanical prints of old roses took my breath away. I couldn't get out my bead board fast enough. I adore roses, and I love the lush blooms in these images as well as the old world backgrounds that are used. The roses make me think of old fashioned bouquets of garden roses, placed in a vase in a parlour or foyer. I have been working on a few different new designs for pendant frames, and working with these images has given me lots of new ideas.

March Wind With Mary Poppins

Chapter one of the delightful classic story,"Mary Poppins", begins with Mary Poppins, magically drifting down from the sky with her umbrella, landing on Cherry Tree Lane, directly in front of the Bank's house. So begins the timeless tale....When I found this charming, vintage (1920s) gingerbread stamping, it immediately made me think of Mary Poppins, and I thought it would be perfect for my "March Wind" series. It is paired with a lustrous sky blue button and hangs from a copper vintage style chain.

There's one more "March Wind" necklace in my Etsy shop. I've so been enjoying creating items by following the seasons. Spring is just about here. Lots of birdies are coming, already have some Spring ideas on the bead board.

Here's the next "March Wind" theme necklace. I went on a quest to look for vintage illustrations of hot air balloons, and I thought the colors on this image were very rich. The back of the pendant has this luscious Maxfield Parrish style sunset. I embellished the chain with some matching vintage floral drops and mother of pearl charms, suggestive of floating clouds. Tiny balloon like beads and blue "sandbag" bags I like how all the elements on the necklace contribute to the theme. There are two more "March Wind" theme necklaces coming, so I will post them soon. I am deliberating on "the ides of March"! I see dark crystals and ????

Sneak Peek - March Wind Theme

Here's a sneak peek of of one of the March Wind necklaces that will be floating into my shop this week. I had loads of fun working on these, and some frustration too as I ended up on a quest to find large light blue mother of pearl buttons. Recently, pearl buttons in all shapes and sizes, have become one of my favorite things to design with. I LOVE using large ones with cabochons, and tiny ones as charms.

Treasure Necklace

I LOVE making treasure necklaces. The design emerges based on favorite colors, shapes, themes and personality. This treasure necklace, created in shades of blue and purple was made for a very special friend. She filled out a "Treasure Necklace Questionnaire", and from there, I began working on the design. She selected many of the beads and the type of chain that was used. As a surprise, for this lover of cats, I added a waving lucky cat charm. Another surprise is the hand painted bead of the pretty Asian beauty to symbolize her daughter, adopted from China. I placed the bead on the necklace so it would be just above her heart.

Overdressed or Personal Style?

Dear Friends of BeadRee,

It's been quite some time since my last post. The holidays have come and gone. Several snowstorms have made billowing postcard views through the evergreens and some wonderful friends and family have come to visit, hot beverages all around. Through it all, this damsel stayed on my desktop, waiting to stroll her way into the blog.

I enjoyed embellishing this image. The moment I saw her, I loved her elegant, graceful demeanor, her ribboned hat and dainty shoes. I am thinking that if I were going to carry firewood, I would love to do so in such rosy attire.

Okay, so I added the lariat, but she wears it well. I have, on many occasions, been been told I was overdressed. My walking partner looked askance at my shawl. People sometimes say to me: "You look awfully dressed up. Where are you going?" Where am I going? I am going into the beautiful precious day, hour, moment of my life, and I have these tiny violet earrings, touched here and there by seed pearls. They were my grandmother's. They look pretty with a cream blouse and a dark skirt. As I get older, I just wear what I enjoy, and I don't wait for "events". Years ago, I gave up wearing blue jeans. It was so liberating. For a while, mostly out of convenience and back pain, I gave up carrying a purse. Purse. Even the word has a sour shape to it. Then, I lost my wallet because it fell out of my coat pocket. I decided if I went back to carrying a purse, I would opt for those wonderful vintage purses that have cloth straps and snap shut in a somewhat bodacious way. My favorite overdressed moment came with equal amounts of drama and regret. That was the day I decided to emulate CocoChanel and wear six strands of pearls. I was on my way out and developed a sudden furiously high fever. I began shaking uncontrollably and found myself in an emergency room bin. The nurse came in carrying a pea soup green gown for me to put on. She took one look at the pearls, dropped the gown on the edge of the cot and walked away. Ah well, I bet I had the best dressed fever in the ward.

Now that this pretty damsel has introduced the pearl lariat to you, I hope you will peek in my shop to see the secret message that it carries.

I am working on a new treasure necklace and will post it when it is done. I am also really looking forward to my March projects. I have been enjoying following the seasons, choosing some projects based on the time of the year and certain holidays, and I found some wonderful vintage items to work with for a "March Wind" theme. As those are finished, I will post them too.

Holiday Jewelry

I miss holiday corsages. When I was growing up, we would often get a surprise corsage as a gift or some holiday jewelry, usually a sparkly pin. I still have a red and white candy cane pin that was in my Christmas stocking. Every year we looked forward to picking out one special outfit to wear for the holidays and to go visiting. It was always so special to add a pretty corsage to our coat lapel.

Speaking of Bows

I have really been enjoying working on the bow bracelet, and it is coming along, almost done. My client requested more purples and green, a frog charm and an initial. I LOVE custom orders, and it has been so much fun to see how this bracelet keeps changing. When it is done, I'll post one more photo.

Bows are one of the themes I enjoy using for inspiration for designs, I am always collecting bow beads and bow charms. I also LOVE working with ribbon. I found these tiny bows quite some time ago. Recently, it occured to me that the colors of the bows really complimented this "oh so yellow" vintage glass pendant. The yellow reminds me of lemon meringue pie. I am still enjoying working in threes, so look for more of these necklaces, coming soon, in purple and blue.

Almost a Bow Bracelet

This is a work in progress, the first version of a custom order for a customer who loves bows. So far, we have three bows in the middle of the bracelet. I will be adding a burgundy bow and an amber bow button. I am looking for more green and burgundy bows. I didn't think it would be so hard to find them, but even the usual vintage sites I visit seem to be pretty low on bows right now. Searching the internet for a specific type of button or bead is half luck, half putting in the right search words. Sometimes it's amazing serendipity, and with one click the perfect little item appears.

The Last Rose of Summer

This fairy tale rose was a gift. I watched the bud appear, but really didn't expect a bloom so late in the season. This is one of my favorite roses. It is called "Heirloom Rose" and its' color is as luxurious as its' scent. If you walk past it or sit near it, a romantic aroma glides by.

Here's the rest of the "sneak peek" necklace. The "Queen of Kindness" necklace is composed of one strand of vintage faux pearls and one strand of beaded purple vintage chain. A rhinestone clasp adds an opulent touch, a nod to royal treasures of long ago. Patti and Karren, thanks for guessing! Karren, isn't it fun? You pretty much got it!

She will make her debut in my shop this week, along with "The Queen of Patience" and "The Queen of Wisdom."

On the Bead Board

I've always got a running list of what I am planning to make. Also, I never know when inspiration will strike, so if I get an idea, I write it down or sketch it and keep it in a notebook that I carry around with me.
I call my list "On the Beard Board". A few things that I have started working on are: Filigree necklaces and bracelets, some new charm bracelets and birthstone jewelry for my other shop (keepsakejewelry.etsy.com).

I have almost collected everything I need for the necklace that is sketched in the picture. The vintage book chain is a lovely shade of light copper. The pendant is almost ready.

My Treasure Necklace and a Special Locket

Every beader needs a treasure necklace. I have made lots of treasure necklaces to sell, but a few months ago I decided it was time to make one for myself. I got out a pretty tin and started collecting favorite beads from my collection. When I made something with beads or crystals that I especially loved, I put one of the beads aside. One day, I went through all my bead boxes. The secret to picking beads for a treasure necklace lies in a simple question: When you come across that bead or charm, does it make your heart go pitter pat? If so, nestle it amongst the other ovals and roses and rounds and bicones, the milk glass, the magic sparkle, the rouge red and the dreamy purple. Eventually, I had enough beads and I just waited until I felt ready to begin.

I decided to use one of my favorite types of vintage style chain. Just before I started to work, I realized that I wanted something very special as the pendant for my treasure necklace. I looked over my pendants, but couldn't seem to find "the one". A few weeks later, not even looking, I discovered a beautiful Victorian locket (used for postage stamps). It stopped me in my tracks! I knew my Treasure Necklace was complete.

For all you locket lovers and vintage afficianados out there, the locket came from a very special Etsy shop: The Eclectic Diva.

It's so much fun to browse through Diva's shop, but bring tea or coffee because there's LOTS to look through.

I love this locket so much I decided to keep it on a matching chain, so I can where it with my treasure necklace or solamente.

I used almost all of the beads from my tin, and I saved a few beads from the next version.

A Lovely Surprise From a Dear Friend

One day, a dear friend of mine sent me a mysterious email message....."This could only be worn by you". I love surprises, but I forgot all about her message, and not long after, a pretty package arrived. Imagine my delight when I opened it and saw this lovely gift, a beautiful vintage necklace:

A Series of Brooch Necklaces

Lately, I've been making things in threes. I like taking one type of component and making different versions of a design. I finally finished my series of brooch necklaces. I enjoyed these so much I ended up making five of them. I love off-center focals, and I knew I wanted to start with that basic design concept. I searched and searched for focal pieces that "grabbed" me. Then I searched and searched for matching beads and clasps that would play off the focal component. When I found this lovely, detailed Madame de Pompadour stamping, I knew I had my first piece to work with for this series. The brooch necklaces also include a shepherdess, a lotus, a romantic cameo and a sugarplum swirl.

Ribbon Bracelet Trio

I love making ribbon bracelets and, each month I try to set aside one week to work with treasures from my stash. I had been saving these trims for awhile and decided to design all three bracelets at once. Usually I work piece by piece, but I really wanted to see how each trim would look done up as a bracelet. I just loved working with the silky gold charm balls. I changed the charms on the rosebud bracelet several times. The mysterious face bracelet added just enough whimsy to the week.

Inspiration Revisited

Remember my "Inspiration" post? I wanted to use the colors in the picture to create some pieces. I finally finished a few pieces using this striking blue and dark mauve combination. I think my favorite is the vintage button bracelet. The earrings are made from very dramatic vintage glass buttons. I started with some flashy dangles on those, but in this case, less really is more, so I opted for focusing on the buttons. Both the buttons and the blue leaves on the charm necklace have been in my bead boxes for a long time. I am glad they are finally "out of the box". With the inspiration from one picture I ended up with one pair of earrings, a bracelet and a necklace. I would LOVE to hear what inspires you when you work. All comments are most welcome!

Inspirations

Last week I worked on some new necklaces and several Valentine charm bracelets. My inspiration came from an article I read about Victorian miniatures and secret admirers.

I love mixing colors in unexpected ways. The colors in this picture are two colors I wouldn't necessarily think to put together, but I absolutely love this combination. I am always drawn to the red palette, so I already have some beads in those tones. I'm going to see if I can find a similar shade of blue to work with. When I'm done, I'll post the finished design,

Three New Button Bracelets

Inspired by my love of classic movies and favorite movie actresses, I have started a series of button bracelets. They remind me of all those scenes when an actress such as Grace Kelly or Myra Loy walks into a club, "dressed" for dinner, a wonderful dash of sparkle on each wrist. The Grace Kelly is my favorite so far. I held onto this button for so long, waiting for the perfect beads to set it off.

On the Bead Board

I have a pretty silvery one that will be the focal point for a bracelet.
I also picked out a cranberry and bronze luster button and a Christmas rose button. Pics to follow.
I thought I would top off this little holiday collection with some rhinestone buttons and beads for a very special charm bracelet.

A Sneak Peek

Here is a peek at the completed pyrite necklace. I wanted to bring something special to my show in Redbank this Saturday.
This necklace is called: Love Conquers All.

When I laid out the pyrite beads onto my bead board, they made me think of the suits of armor worn by the Knights of the Round Table. That's how this necklace came together. The selection of hearts begin with very tiny resin hearts, and the hearts get bigger and bigger. Instead of traditional tones of red for the "color of love", I decided to use shades of gold and lavender.

This necklace will make its debut in my Etsy shop sometime next week.

I have been working on a very special necklace and hope to add a picture of the finished piece soon.

Awhile ago, I purchased some oval pyrite beads. As a child, I LOVED pyrite. It was the prize of my rock collection. It was so dark and mysteriously glittery. I had actually never seen pyrite beads before, and it was an unusual choice for me since I am always drawn to glass before gemstone. Anyway, I tucked them away in my bead box, and suddenly one day, a necklace popped into my head, and the pyrite beads were at the "heart" of the idea. I hope you'll stop back often. Last month, I finished the series of perfume bottle necklaces. I saved one more smaller, violet colored bottle because I am looking for just the right beads to set it off.

This month, I am working on some very special necklaces to bring to a show later in the month. I have been collecting vintage style heart charms for a new necklace.

The fairy bracelets continue to be a popular item, so I will replenish the supply.
